Allen has been serving the needs of the hearing impaired population in the Miami Valley since 1968. Since 1972, he has been both a member of the Ohio Hearing Aid Society and the International Hearing Aid Society as well as licensed by the State of Ohio. In 1988, he became Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences and in 1990 completed the American Conference Audioprosthology course. He has been very active in the hearing health care community, serving on the State Board as a Trustee, Vice President and a two term Presidency. Allen also helped the Sertoma Club of Troy incorporate a hearing awareness program in city schools. For his efforts, he was awarded the 1996 Sertoman of the year. In 2001, he was the recipient of the Pat Clark Award for service to all Ohio dispensers.

As an active member of his church in Troy, Allen has traveled to Pucallpa, Peru yearly on medical missionary trips since 1997. He performs hearing testing and distributes hearing aids to the Shapibo Indians of this village. The South American Mission sponsors this trip with support from his local church along with ENT Associates of Greater Dayton and Hillcrest Hearing Aids. (See pictures from Allen's 2003 trip)

Allen has been married to Nancy since 1964, has two children, and three grandchildren.
